What you need to know about the ACA Open Enrollment

First things, first: what is Obamacare?

“Obamacare” is a nickname for the healthcare law known as PPACA of 2010. The law is often called the Affordable Care Act (ACA) too. And it also includes ACA Open Enrollment.

It aims to reduce healthcare spending and give more you access to both public and private health plans. These plans are regulated to make them more available. Affordable and higher quality.

Consumer protections, regulations, subsidies, taxes, and insurance exchanges are all a part of Obamacare.

  • Obamacare offers some benefits, rights, and protections about healthcare. By this law, you may benefit:
  • Young adults can stay on their parent’s plan until 26 years old.
  • People have the right to a rapid appeal of insurance company decisions.
  • It expands coverage to tens of millions by subsidizing health insurance costs.
  • And for health insurance companies, protects their customers by:
  • Stopping insurance companies from denying you coverage.
  • Preventing them to charge you more based on health status.
  • Not letting them drop you when you are sick or if you made an honest mistake on your application.
  • Stopping them from imposing unjustified rate hikes.
  • Requiring all insurers to cover people with pre-existing conditions.
  • Ensuring all plans cover minimum benefits. Free preventive care, free birth control, and coverage for emergency room visits are some of the benefits offered.

What is ACA open enrollment, and when does it happen?

The ACA open enrollment period is a time that happens once a year. This time is usually in the fall. That is when you can sign up for health insurance and adjust or cancel your plan.

It is usually limited to a few weeks. If you miss it, you may have to wait until the next open enrollment period to make any changes.

You will have more time to shop for health coverage with an extended ACA open enrollment period. It begins on November 1, and ends January 15 every year.

Yet, enrollments need to be completed by December 15, to have coverage begin on January 1. Enrollments completed between December 16 and January 15 will have coverage starting February 1.

Why should you shop for coverage during ACA open enrollment?

The main reason it is that health coverage helps protect you from both health and financial risks. No one plans to get hurt or to be sick, but most people need medical care at some point. Health insurance can help cover these costs.

During the ACA Open Enrollment Period, plans are more affordable than ever.

With health insurance, you have access to free preventive care. It includes vaccines, screenings, and some check-ups, even before you meet your deductible.

What information do I need to support an ACA health insurance plan?

You need to have this information on hand for each person to be enrolled during ACA Open Enrollment in ACA health insurance:

  • Full name.
  • Email address.
  • Home address.
  • Social security number.
  • Date of birth.
  • Proof of legal residency status.
  • Family size and yearly income (to apply for subsidized premium or sharing reductions). A variety of documents can be used to assess your income, including pay stubs, W2 forms, most recent tax return, etc.
  • Coverage and premium details for any employer-sponsored plan that is available to your family. Regardless of whether you are enrolled in that plan or declining.
  • Payment information that the insurer may use to collect your premiums.
  • A list of medications that a person is taking and any preexisting conditions. Each insurance policy has its own covered list of drugs. You will want to see which of the drugs you need most the plan covers.

Is there a penalty for not having health insurance?

There is no federal government penalty for not having insurance by 2022, but you still need coverage! The risk you take in not having insurance is not worth it. That is why the leading reason people end up bankrupt is associated with medical bills.

Can I renew my current ACA health insurance plan?

If you are already enrolled in the ACA for your health care options through Healthcare.Gov, you can auto-renew that plan.

But, in most cases, we do not recommend this. You may make a serious mistake by renewing your plan. Your existing plan may have changed, the doctors’ network may have been altered, or you could be paying much more money.

Can I see health insurance plans and prices?

Yes! Starting November 1, you can call your health insurance agent to get this information.

For rates and policy options, this information is available for you in person or over the phone. You can make an appointment with a health insurance agent who will help you choose the best options available for you.

At NavSav, our agents continue to help our clients. We supply advice, answering questions related to billing, usage, complaints, and appeals.
